Project Profile – National Banking Group Northampton

Nationwide Building Society is a British mutual financial institution, the seventh largest cooperative financial institution and the largest building society in the world with over 15 million members.

DL M&E Building Services were engaged by Nationwide to undertake the design and build project for the replacement of an aged and undersized UPS system and bring the critical mechanical and electrical installations within the corporate office to N+1 resilience. Developing the employer’s requirements pack to a RIBA stage 4 design saw the creation of a new UPS room, and the installation of a new LV system to support the existing electrical infrastructure. A new 100kVA N+1 UPS system was installed to support the IT rooms throughout the North Building, and a new 40 kVA N+1 UPS system was installed to support the IT rooms throughout the South Building. Both UPS systems had an autonomy of 10 minutes at end of life.

Within several tech rooms new N+1 air conditioning systems were installed. New cooling was also installed to support the news UPS systems, along with ventilation. All M&E systems were installed whilst maintaining the operation of the existing systems, ensuring that throughout the installation works the building maintained the agreed resilience. Upon completion, all the existing systems were disconnected and removed from the building.

In addition, as part of the project, DL M&E undertook the relocation of the external plant, to enable the roof to be repaired. This aspect of works involved the decommissioning/recommissioning of the AC systems throughout the building in line with an exacting programme of works. This allowed all the external condensers to be moved, enabling the builders works to be completed.
